'5 Things I Didn’t Realize I’d Be Working on When I Decided to Become a Librarian' - 5? Try 50!

acrllog

So, I read this post the other day from the ACRLog where these 5 things are listed as described above:

  1. Authentication
  2. Mobile Platforms
  3. Course Management Systems
  4. Unofficial student tech support
  5. Making and editing videos

In my nearly 8 years since completing my MLIS, I have indeed touched on each of the topics listed above. But, the list is, in my opinion, potentially much much longer for librarians/info professionals/information architects today. Here are a few more I can throw in the mix from my personal experience:

  1. Content Management Systems
  2. Domain models, User journeys, task analysis
  3. CSS, HTML
  4. Managing PHP programmers
  5. Procuring cloud server space
  6. Tech support on over 80 websites
  7. Twitter - I mean, Twitter as resource discovery tool extraordinaire
  8. RDFa, OWL (okay, haven't used them yet but know how, more or less :-) )
  9. Creating Podcasts, Slidecasts, Videocasts
  10. Using SOAP web services to exchange structured XML
11. Being more comfortable with raw HTML code than with a WYSIWYG editor 12. Learning and using both digital and physical preservation techniques and principles 13. Working at the British Library and never touching a book for work reasons! 14. Information Architecture 15. Re-starting JBoss on an Apache server 16. Troubleshooting errors in Java code 17. Drupal 18. Web 2.0 19. Web 3.0 20. I'm sure there will be something new tomorrow :-)

One thing's for sure, I definitely feel that I chose the right profession!
